Digital Ceramics
Incremental Living Wall
Inspired by the repetitive and interlocking shapes of barnacles, this project used a process of digital modeling, 3-D printing, mold making and ceramic slip casting, to produce multiple copies of stackable and interlocking vertical planters. Using an experimental process at the time of 3-D printing concrete, I printed a model of a singular object. A three-part mold was made of the object in order to slip-cast multiple objects in porcelain. I then stacked them in a wooden armature for the final display.
Landscapes of Translucence
Inspired by Ernst Haeckelʼs canonical illustrations, I used a process of digital modeling, milling, mold making and ceramic slip casting, to produce multiple copies of a single tile to create a new assemblage. Using porcelain, a transparent material when fired, allowed the tool paths from the milling of the mold to appear in the final tiles. I welded an arced steel armature with draping wire to support the tiles. LED lighting was used to accentuate the translucence of the porcelain.
